Case Study: General Electric Corporate Aviation Hangar

Durable Flexibility with the LIGHTWALL 3000

Project: General Electric Corporate Aviation Hangar

Location: Newburgh, NY

Architect: HLW International, LLP

System: LIGHTWALL 3000

The General Electric (GE) private hangar was in need of not only a repair, but an upgrade. Years of harsh weather and the extreme aviation environment had damaged the façade, and the facility had a dated look. GE was looking for a new exterior that would provide the bright daylighting their maintenance crew required while saving on energy costs, delivering ecological benefits, and creating a more contemporary appearance. Further, the glazing material had to be tough enough to withstand stones and other debris which would be blown off the tarmac by the jet engines.

The hangar’s doors were clad with the EXTECH LIGHTWALL 3000 system. This patented system allows both vision glass and 1" thick cellular polycarbonate to be integrated into the same façade.

EXTECH’s 3000 system was chosen because it provided daylighting while also being durable and flexible. Durability was a necessity due to the hangar’s surroundings. Impact resistant polycarbonate is ideal for aviation environments because it easily withstands ‘Jet Wash’ – the high-velocity debris-laden winds that accompany jet engine startup.

Weight is another important consideration for hangar doors, as the doors are continuously opened and closed. The new aluminum and polycarbonate system weighed considerably less than the previous steel and glass façade. This allowed for additional cost savings since lighter duty operating hardware could be employed.
