The San Mateo WTP sought to revive their aging wastewater treatment system, funded by a regional initiative to modernize San Francisco Bay’s sewer infrastructure. EXTECH was tasked with providing a daylighting solution that would help modernize the facility.

The EXTECH LIGHTWALL 3440 system was selected to provide durable, low-maintenance daylighting across multiple elevations. The system delivers uniform natural light, visual continuity, and long-term performance while accommodating large wall openings and corner-wrap conditions.

Design Solution

EXTECH furnished a translucent polycarbonate wall system with aluminum framing engineered to meet project-specific performance and structural requirements. The LIGHTWALL 3440 system features interlocking tongue-and-groove glazing panels that create a clean, continuous façade while allowing diffused daylight to penetrate interior spaces. The factory-fabricated aluminum translucent wall system allows for rapid installation and less field waste compared to stick-built systems.

The LIGHTWALL system was furnished for four building elevations, totaling over 3,900 square feet of translucent wall area. The system was featured in a headworks space, odor control building, dumpster and electrical building, and an additional building.

Value Delivered

  • Maximized daylighting while maintaining privacy and glare control
  • Clean architectural appearance across large wall spans
  • Engineered aluminum framing for durability and long service life
  • Factory fabrication for consistent quality and efficient installation
  • Seamless integration with adjacent building systems

EXTECH provided complete structural engineering calculations for the LIGHTWALL system, along with shop drawings, installation drawings, and sample submittals to support design coordination and approvals.

This resulted in a high-performance translucent wall solution that enhances daylighting, supports architectural intent, and delivers long-term value through proven EXTECH system design.  The San Mateo Wastewater Treatment facility officially opened in September 2025.
