CASE STUDY: Ed Davis Recreation Center – LIGHTWALL 210 Dual Wall System

LIGHTWALL 210 Exterior Translucent Wall System
Project Specs

Ed Davis Recreation Center | 730 Perkins Park Dr, Akron, OH 44320

Architect: PRIME AE
General Contractor: Infinity Construction
Installer: Imperial Glazing Concept
Daylighting System Manufacturer: EXTECH/Exterior Technologies, Inc.

The City of Akron undertook a major transformation of the Ed Davis Recreation Center, originally constructed in 1976. The goal was to expand the building to more than 24,000 SF and create a modern, welcoming community destination that could support a wide range of uses including a full-size gymnasium, walking track, community meeting spaces, and multi-purpose spaces. The architectural vision by PRIME AE required large translucent wall systems that would deliver natural daylight while blending with the surrounding landscape. To achieve this, the project team—led by Infinity Construction with installation by Imperial Glazing Concept—needed a daylighting façade system that provided aesthetics, energy efficiency, durability, and precise engineering support.

EXTECH was selected to supply its LIGHTWALL 210 dual-wall translucent polycarbonate system. The project required integration of the polycarbonate system with multiple glass-glazed openings provided by others. EXTECH’s responsibilities included providing shop drawings, engineering calculations, and fully fabricated system components that met fire performance requirements and supported seamless installation.

The project included two major translucent wall assemblies, including an 840 SF polycarbonate system with 209 SF of integrated type U glass windows, and a 676 SF polycarbonate system with 72 SF of integrated type T glass windows.

To support the architect’s design intent and contractor installation needs, EXTECH delivered a fully engineered solution that included:

System Components & Engineering Support

  • Complete shop drawings and engineering calculations.
  • Factory-fabricated aluminum framing with installed gaskets and pre-drilled mounting holes.
  • Thermally broken extruded aluminum framing with Class I Clear Anodized finish.
  • Dual-wall 10mm structured translucent polycarbonate panels with coextruded matte finishes, UV protection, and Class A fire rating (ASTM E-84).
  • Factory-cut panels
  • Factory brake-formed aluminum sill flashing, color-matched to the framing system.

Throughout the process, EXTECH collaborated with the project team to ensure accuracy in fabrication, smooth integration, and efficient field installation.

The renovated Ed Davis Recreation Center officially opened on December 3, 2024. Mayor Malik celebrated the opening as a significant investment in the city’s neighborhoods and a continuation of the legacy of Ed Davis, the Ohio politician for whom the center is named. The completed facility now offers upgraded kitchens and community rooms, a teen activity room, a new entry courtyard, expanded recreational amenities, and a full-size gym with an indoor walking track.

EXTECH’s LIGHTWALL 210 system contributes significantly to the success of the transformed facility. The translucent polycarbonate walls deliver bright, even daylight that enhances occupant comfort while reducing glare and supporting energy efficiency. The modern façade aligns with PRIME AE’s architectural vision and blends seamlessly with Perkins Park’s natural environment. Thanks to the high-quality engineering, prefabrication, and coordinated support from EXTECH, the glazing contractor was able to complete the installation on schedule and with precision.

Today, the expanded recreation center stands as a vibrant hub for the Akron community—its welcoming atmosphere and enhanced functionality supported in part by the high-performance daylighting solutions provided by EXTECH.
