CELEBRATING 50 YEARS: 2008 Patented Innovations in Glass Block Design

In 2008, EXTECH was awarded a patent that addressed persistent challenges in windscreen systems. The invention improved how assemblies handle movement, alignment, and environmental exposure without adding complexity.

The patent became the foundation for EXTECH’s Matrixwall system, a modular, mortarless glass block wall designed for performance and precision. Rather than using grout or mortar, the system relies on an internal aluminum grid to align and support each block. Blocks are sealed with silicone and protected by snap-on elastomeric covers that shield the joints from UV exposure. This approach improves resistance to air and water infiltration, simplifies installation, and allows for easier maintenance or block replacement.

Though concealed within the larger systems, these patented components solve real-world challenges that affect building performance over time. They reflect the kind of purposeful, resilient innovation that has shaped EXTECH’s legacy and continues to influence its work today.
