As part of EXTECH’s 50th Anniversary Patent Series, we’re spotlighting 2012—a standout year of innovation. EXTECH secured patents for two systems that pushed the boundaries of design flexibility and durability. These systems were designed to solve long-standing construction challenges—such as managing thermal movement, preventing water intrusion, and supporting seamless integration across wall and glazing systems.
One of these innovations was a versatile panel system designed for use in both overhead glazing and vertical wall applications. Its layered extrusions support a range of panel materials, reducing complexity while preserving energy efficiency and long-term performance. The system aimed to simplify the replacement of individual panels. The result: simplified maintenance and improved thermal insulation.
Another advancement was a two-part internal mullion that solved a key challenge: maintaining a watertight, adaptable seal while accommodating thermal expansion. Its interlocking extrusions allow for variable pressure engagement and consistent support—especially important for long spans and extreme temperature variations. This advanced technology allows long spans and high wind loading conditions.
This system would go on to be implemented in a large manufacturing plant in Alabama and would pave the way for future technologies used in EXTECH wall and canopy systems. The 3100LS would go on to become the 8000 system used in projects today.
Together, these systems reflect EXTECH’s legacy of field-proven, performance-first innovation. For 50 years, we’ve worked closely with architects and builders to engineer solutions that solve real-world problems and stand the test of time. As we celebrate this milestone, our focus remains clear: to keep building what’s next in daylighting and façade design.
