As EXTECH celebrates 50 years of innovation, we look back at key milestones, including the completion of our largest KINETICWALL to date. Installed in 2023 as an integral part of a four-level, 520,000-square-foot parking garage at a leading technology campus in Mountain View, California, this wind-activated façade exemplifies EXTECH’s dedication to sustainable and forward-thinking design.
This striking installation features 111,692 aluminum flappers, each 8 by 8 inches and finished in 35 custom colors. Designed using advanced digital mapping, the flappers form a pixelated mural that shifts with the wind, creating an ever-changing visual display. But the facade is more than just an artistic statement—it enhances passive airflow and daylighting, reducing the need for mechanical ventilation and artificial lighting.
With decades of expertise, EXTECH engineered the KINETICWALL as a fully passive system, operating without motors, electricity, or complex controls. The result is a low-maintenance, high-impact solution that improves building performance while providing a dynamic connection to the surrounding environment. EXTECH’s ability to blend precision engineering with dynamic design continues to push the boundaries of architectural design.
This project stands as a testament to the company’s drive to create solutions that are functional, sustainable, and visually striking. Looking ahead, EXTECH remains dedicated to redefining what’s possible in architecture—one groundbreaking project at a time.
