United Nations North Lawn Project Details
Location: New York, NY
Architect: FTL Design Engineering Studio
System: LIGHTWALL 3440
EXTECH's LIGHTWALL 3440 was utilized for the Porte Cochere at the temporary United Nations North Lawn Building. The canopy and clear wall panels system served as an entrance pavilion and security check point for the general assembly delegates. FTL Design Engineering Studio designed the structure to be relocatable so that it could be moved to another part of the United Nations campus when the temporary building was no longer needed.
The architect took a light and sustainable approach to the design by using a minimum of materials to reduce environmental impact. Due to the temporary nature of the interim buildings, the sustainability of the Porte Cochere was important to the United Nations and was considered at outset of the design process. Because the LIGHTWALL 3440 is 100% recyclable, the system matched well with this design intent. Drawing inspiration from the surrounding landscape, the canopy is nested within the campus surroundings by leveraging the contours of site as a visual buffer.
