Greater Boston Food Bank Project Details

Location: Boston, MA

Architect: Chan Krieger Sieniewicz

System: LIGHTWALL 3440

The Greater Boston Food Bank is the largest hunger-relief organization in New England and among the largest food banks in the country. The architect took a sustainable approach to the expansion of their distribution center in Boston's South End. The green practices employed by Chan Krieger Sieniewicz included utilizing a zero-export plan to minimize waste, reusing existing pile caps and fill, incorporating a solar wall and natural ventilation, and utilizing EXTECH's LIGHTWALL 3440 for parts of the facade. The LIGHTWALL 3440 translucent wall panels and aluminum framing are 100% recyclable, and maximize the use of daylighting, which can lower energy costs and help earn LEED certification.

When the expansion was complete, the facility earned a LEED certification, was able to hold more than 50 million pounds of food, and greatly increased the overall building efficiency.
